2018 WSGA Senior Championship

A full field of 112 golfers from throughout the South are set to compete Oct. 16-18 at the 33rd Annual Women’s Southern Golf Association Senior Championship at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, MS.

Texas once again leads the way in competitors with 28 Texans set to tee it up in the event. Host Mississippi has 22 players with neighboring Louisiana with 21. Arkansas will also bring a strong group of 16 golfers. Other states represented will be Alabama 7, Virginia 5, Tennessee and Oklahoma 4 each, South Carolina 2 and Florida, North Carolina and Georgia 1 each.

Registration and the practice round are set Monday, Oct. 15 with a Welcome Party to follow that evening. The tournament will get underway Tuesday, October 16 with 18 holes of stroke play followed by rounds on Wednesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 18. An Awards Luncheon will be held at the completion of play.

Local Tournament Chairman Sheila Haynes of Reunion is excited about her club hosting the 2018 WSGA Senior Championship. “We have a full field of women from all over the South,” said Haynes this week. “All of the social activities will be held in our beautiful new clubhouse and the golf course is in immaculate shape. As local chairperson for this event I couldn’t be more proud to slow off our beautiful facility. I believe everyone will be very impressed and will look forward to coming back to future events at Reunion.”

Three former Southern Champions are in this year’s field. They include Chris Spivey of Alabama (1999), Taffy Brower of Florida (2004 and 2012) and Anna Schultz of Texas (2006 and 2007). In addition Brower has won the Super Senior Trophy for the past 3 years.

Other former WSGA champions in the field who look to make a strong run at the title include the past 2 Mid-Amateur winners, Susan West of Alabama (2018) and Tanna Richard of Arkansas (2017). Host Chairman Sheila Haynes sports a 4.4 handicap and should be one of the front-runners on her home course. Haynes is a former Mississippi Senior Champion and a 7-time winner of the Mississippi Four-Ball title.

WSGA Tournament Chairman Connie Bousquet echoed Haynes’ sentiments in welcoming players to this year’s event. “This WSGA Senior Championship is shaping up to be one of the best we have had. Reunion is one of the best courses in Mississippi and its perfect condition will test all your golf shots. The newly-opened clubhouse is first class and features a grand porch to sit and reminisce about your round.” The chairman urged those who haven’t signed up to send their entries in as there are always cancellations with last-minute spots to be filled.
