Senior golfers from throughout the South have a great opportunity coming up as The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA will host the Women’s Southern Senior Amateur Championship September 19-21.
The 54-hole stroke play event will be played on the Cascades Course, which is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Allegheny Mountains.
Designed by legendary course architect William S. Flynn, who was also instrumental in building Shinnecock Hills, The Cascades uses its varied terrain to influence play rather than dictate it. It has consistently been ranked among Virginia’s finest golf courses and has played host to 7 USGA championships.
Sam Snead launched his career at this fabled Virginia mountain golf course which has earned many honors down through the years. It has been named among America’s “100 Greatest Golf Courses” by Golf Digest and frequently tops the list of Golfweek magazine’s “Best Golf Courses You Can Play in Each State.” Snead served for decades as The Homestead golf professional.
Among the presidents who have teed it up at The Homestead are William Howard Taft, Dwight D. Eisenhower and George H.W. Bush. It has also hosted sevral generations of Rockefellers.
In 2016 The Homestead celebrated 250 years as America’s first resort. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Defending WSGA Senior Champion is Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge, LA. Harrison won last year’s senior championship which was played on The Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, FL.
