Local favorite Susan West outlasted Prattville’s Linda Jeffery Friday to claim the 4th WSGA Mid-Amateur Championship on her home course, NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa.
West, who won the match 3&2, said going birdie/eagle on holes #12 and #13 was the turning point in the match. “Linda is a great opponent and it was a hard-fought contest.” West’s victory is all the more impressive considering she was also the WSGA Tournament Chairman in addition to one of the favorites to win the title.
“We were very fortunate to have Kathryn Moore as Host Club Chairman,” said West after her win. “She did a great job and allowed me to relax and focus on golf.”
“Although it is a blessing to get to compete for a championship on your home course there are also high expectations and some added pressure you put on yourself”, said West. “But the win is very rewarding in the end.”
West entered match play as the 13th seed after shooting 83 in Monday’s qualifier. Jeffery was co-medalist, along with Kristyl Sunderman, after shooting a 75 in the qualifying round.
West opened play with a 2-up win over Suzanne Kenkel and then defeated Lea Green in her Wednesday match. In the quarterfinals Thursday morning West beat Camm Doughtery 2-up and then defeated longtime Southern Champion Taffy Brower 3&1 in the semifinals.
Jeffery began match play with a 2&1 win over Becky Mitchell followed by a victory over Theresa Malik. Jeffery took down Anna Schultz in 20 holes in the quarterfinals and then bested Nora Phillips 3&2 to earn her spot in the Championship match.
Tama Caldabaugh of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL defeated Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge, LA 4&3 to claim the Consolation Championship.
Harrison, who shot 83 in the qualifier, came in as the 15th seed while Caldabaugh’s 82 gave her the 12th seed. Caldabaugh, who fell into the Consolation bracket after an opening round loss to Tara Joy Connelly, then beat Suzanne Kenkel and defending champion Tanna Richard to make the finals. Harrison lost to Theresa Malik in her first match and then reeled off wins over Becky Mitchell, Leslie Henry and Julie Oxendine to make the finals.
In the First Flight of the Mid-Amateur tournament Kerry Lareau defeated Melissa Gotfredson in the Championship match. The Consolation First Flight was won by Barbara Brown, who defeated runner-up Wendy Kahn in Thursday’s final.
