Plans are near completion for the 2018 Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships which are scheduled June 4-8 at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, AL.
Players should be on the lookout for the entries for the Championships which should be available later this month.
NorthRiver Yacht Club’s golf course is uniquely beautiful with numerous elevation changes. The course meanders through heavily wooded areas and rolling terrain.
The Par 71 course was originally designed by Gary Player in 1978 and was re-designed by Bob Cupp in 1999 and 2015. The Club maintains the area’s best practice facility which features two practice greens, a wee links mini-course, as well as a first class short game area and a state-of-the-art teaching and learning center.
NorthRiver’s golf course was enhanced during the Summer of 2015. The greens were converted to TifEagle Bermuda grass, which provides an exceptional putting surface and will perform year round in their Southern climate. The Tuscaloosa facility has also installed the Better Billy Bunker system in all of its bunkers.
The signature hole is #17, a par 3 over water draped with a background of vibrant azaleas, enhancing the wonder of this beautiful southern gem.
Defending champion in the Amateur is SMU golfer Lindsey McCurdy of Liberty Hill, TX, who won last year’s event held at the Granada Course at Hot Springs Village, AR . She won the Championship with a 1-up win over University of Georgia golfer Gabriela Coello, who hails from Winter Garden, FL.
Last year’s Mid-Amateur Champion was Tanna Richard of Fort Smith, AR. She defeated runner-up Susan West of Tuscaloosa in the finals.
