WSGA Mid-Amateur Players to Watch

WSGA Mid-Amateur Championship

An impressive field of 40 competitors, including the returning champion and runner-up, will compete in the Women’s Southern Golf Association 4th Mid-Amateur Championship set June 4-8 at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Back to defend her title will be Tanna Richard of Ft. Smith, AR, who won the championship in 2017 at the Granada Course at Hot Springs Village. Last year’s runner-up, Susan West of Tuscaloosa, will be looking to claim the title on her home course. West lost to Richard 3&2 in last year’s championship match.

This year’s impressive field includes a group of former WSGA champions, led by Taffy Brower of Florida, who won both the Amateur and the Senior Championships in 2004, the only person to ever win both in the same year. Brower added another Senior title in 2012.

Two-time WSGA Senior champions Carolyn Creekmore (2008 and 2015) and Anna Schultz (2006 and 2007) will also be looking to add a Mid-Amateur title to their impressive resumes. Both are from Texas. Also in the field is the 2016 WSGA Senior Champion Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge, LA The first medalist in the inaugural Mid-Amateur in 2015, Therese Quinn of Florida, is also in this year’s field.

Other players of note include last year’s medalist Julie Oxendine of Dover, AR and the lowest handicapper in the field, Tara Joy Connelly of West Palm Beach, FL. Connelly, who sports a +2.3 handicap, has over 25 USGA appearances, including 2 trips to the Mid-Amateur semifinals.

Texas again leads in numbers in the Mid-Amateur with 13 Texans teeing it up this year. Host Alabama will have 8 players in the field followed by Florida with 5. Arkansas will be represented by 4 players, with Louisiana and Georgia having 3 each. Two players will hair from Tennessee with one each from Mississippi and Oklahoma.

Tanna Richard

Defending Champion Tanna Richard is looking forward to defending her title at this year’s event. “I have been working hard on getting my game together and look forward to playing the beautiful NorthRiver course.” Tanna, who has competed in 50 USGA events in her career, and her husband Ron are both members of the Arkansas State Golf Hall of Fame.

Susan West

2017 WSGA Mid-Amateur runner-up Susan West is excited about competing for the championship on her home course. West, who is the WSGA’s chairman of this year’s event, said even though some people might feel added pressure playing at home, “There is no place I would rather be than playing at NorthRiver, my home course.” West, who played tennis at the University of Alabama, has played in 12 USGA championships, including seven USGA Mid-Amateurs.

Carolyn Creekmore

Always a Player to Watch at any event she competes in is Carolyn Creekmore of Dallas, TX. Creekmore won the WSGA Senior Championships in 2008 and 2015 and captured the USGA Senior title in 2004. She is a member of both the Texas and Arkansas Golf Halls of Fame.
