Calle Nielson was the only under par golfer in the Monday qualifier and no one has come close to her since the first match. In her two matches today she dispensed with Ket Preamchuen from Kennesaw State and then took control early and downed Furman’s Laura Wearn in the afternoon semi-finals. On the other side of the bracket Meagan Roberts from University of Arkansas prevailed in two close matches edging out Jordan Britt from University of Tennesee-Chattenooga and then took out University of Alabama golfer, Hannah Collier 2 up in the semi-finals. Collier just edged out defending champion Ashley Lance.

COLLEGE GOLFERS TAKE OVER WOMEN’S SOUTHERN

At the end of Monday’s qualifying round the top 32 in the championship flight consisted of four seniors, four mid-ams, two juniors and 22 collegiate golfers. At the end of the first round, there were no seniors, two mid-ams, no juniors and fourteen college golfers. Former champions, Virginia Derby Grimes, Taffy Brower both lost out with Grimes falling to 2010 WSGA Champion Ashley Lance from Ole Miss and Brower losing to Virginia’s Elizabeth Brightwell.

2005 WSGA Champion Laura Coble overwhelmed Towson University’s Airielle Dawson 7 and 6 while mid-am Wendy Golden eliminated fellow mid-am Dawn Woodard, 1up. Medalist Calle Nielson was severely challenged by Alyssa Randolph but pulled out her victory on the eighteenth hole.

Other collegiate winners were Mercer’s Mary Alice Murphy and Kimmy Graff, Alabama’s Hannah Collier, Arkansas’s Meagan Roberts, Furman’s Laura Wearn, South Florida’s Anna Hancock, Kennesaw State’s Ket Preamchuen, Virginia’s Kaira Martin and University of Tennessee-Chattenooga’s Jordan Britt.

It was hot in Atlanta but nothing could cool off Calle Nielson from the University of Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee as she finished the qualifying round at one under par 70, two strokes better than all other competitors. Neilson had a bogey on the fifth hole followed by a birdie on the par three seventh hole to make the turn at even par. She had two birdies and one bogey on the back nine. Hannah Collier from the University of Alabama came in with a one over par 71. Six players finished at 72 and the low thirty two championship flight included all the competitors who shot 79 or better. Michaela Owen shot 75 to earn Junior Medalist honors. Taffy Brower, the 2004 WSGA Champion and Leslie Henry from Addison, Texas tied for Senior Medalist at 78.
