2010 WSGA Senior Champion

Wanda Carroll, Jonesboro, AR
2010 WSGA Super Senior Champion

Mina Hardin of Fort Worth ,TX wins the 25th WSGA Senior Amateur at Texarkana Country Club by four strokes over Anna Schultz of Rockwall, TX and Angela Stewart of Greenville, NC . Hardin and Schultz just reversed an earlier October meeting in the Fort Worth City Women’s Championship where Schultz had bested Hardin by four stokes to win the Fort Worth City title. Hardin praised her game plan of staying out of the penal rough and the pine straw laden woods of the tree lined Texarkana C.C. on her third round. With the first low temperature of the fall, Hardin was faced with a fear of injury in trying to hack out of the snarled rough with a competitive distance. Hardin elected to just focus on fairways until the sun could rise higher and bring a little warmth to her sore hand. Despite giving up distance for control, Hardin was able to get a rhythm by making better shots from the better lies. Hardin feared Stewart’s distance and power might prevail; but Stewart faltered on the back nine unable to make any birdies to cover her bogeys. Schultz was able to match Hardin’s even par round on the front but made an uncharacteristic double on number 14. Schultz was able to capture the runner-up trophy from Stewart, however, in a scorecard tie-breaker . Fourth Place in the Championship Flight went to Lecia Alexander of Stafford, TX. Wanda Carroll of Jonesboro, Arkansas won the Super Senior Trophy. Her hole-in-one during the practice round was an omen for the 76 year old golfer that this might be a special week .

Hardin received her second standing ovation of the week as she approached the podium to receive her trophy from President, Pat McKamey . Her first ovation came as she was introduced at the Welcoming Party by McKamey as the new USGA Women’s Senior Champion for 2010. Hardin had turned fifty just in time to play and qualify for the USGA Women Senior Amateur in Fort Meyers, FL only a week before leaving for Texarkana. As she received her trophy, Hardin spoke of the joy of finally getting to compete with senior women golfers. She is finding they have a more relaxed, friendly competition, where off the course social contact is welcome and the fellowship of golf runs deep. Hardin later summed up her thoughts on her new life as a senior golfer saying, “ Senior Women Golfers are still very “cut throat “ competitive; but , while you are bleeding, a Senior Amateur will give you a band-aid for your cut. “ Hardin, who was on the women’s professional tour between 1983 and 1989 and has played Amateur and Mid–Amateur events since being reinstated as an amateur, finds her new status as a senior a very positive place for her golf. She vowed in her acceptance speech to return to a WSGA Senior because it is such a friendly and fun atmosphere professionally run by a group of yellow jacketed volunteers.
