Ashley Lance is the 2010 WSGA Amateur Champion!

ASHLEY LANCE WINS SOUTHERN

The 95th Women’s Southern Amateur Championship has been held at scenic Lookout Mountain.

Ashley Lance started out the week strong with an even par 72 to earn Co-Medalist honors and got stronger with each match to win the title over Corinna Rees 9 & 8. Ashley will be a junior at Ole Miss next year and proved too strong for the University of Arkansas senior in an all-SEC matchup. After 13 holes, Lance had built a commanding 4 up lead. Lance birdied the sixteenth hole to extend her lead to five up. Corinna then won the eighteenth hole when Lance drove into the rough. The players broke for lunch with Lance up four.

The daily rain delay struck at the 20th hole. Play resumed and Lance quickly birdied the 20th to go back to 5 up. By the 24th hole, the lead was seven. Rees continued her putting woes and by the final turn the lead was 8 up for Lance. Lance closed it out with a flourish with an eagle of the 28th hole for her victory.

Local Knowledge is Vital at Women's Southern

Knowledge of the greens at Lookout Mountain Golf Club has proven the difference this week at the Women’s Southern Amateur. Brooke Pancake from Chattenooga, Mary Alice Murphy from Lookout Mountain and former Tennessee champion Dawn Woodard have played Lookout Mountain many times and all three have charged into the quarterfinals with decided wins today. Brooke Pancake ended her match on the twelfth hole for the second day. Dawn Woodard started strong and ended her match on eleven. Mary Alice Murphy defeated US Open qualifier, Janine Fellows 3&2.

Bama golfer Pancake will face co-medalist Ashley Lance from Ole Miss in a SEC match-up. Murphy who will start at Mercer University in the fall will face Senior Co-Medalist Carolyn Creekmore from Dallas, Texas. Woodard will face Corinna Rees from the University of Arkansas.

University of Georgia teammates Kendall Wright and Abby Johnson won their matches and will face each other in the quarterfinals. Johnson won on the 18th hole when former champion Laura Coble was not able to get her par putt to drop.

The semi-finals will be played Thursday afternoon with a 36-hole final on Friday.

Tuesday Match Play News
Local Favorites Advance in Women's Southern

Local favorites Brooke Pancake and Mary Alice Murphy advanced to the second round of match play today. Pancake quickly dispensed with Tovie St. Louis on hole 12 with a 7&6 victory while Murphy had to birdie the eighteenth hole to close out Mercer University golfer Kimberly Graff. Brooke will face Anna Hancock on Wednesday with a tee time of 8:45. Murphy who will be a freshman at Mercer University, will take on Tulane’s Janine Fellows, who just last week qualified for the Women’s US Open.

Mid-Ams Laura Coble and Dawn Woodard both advanced as well as senior golfer Carolyn Creekmore while senior golfer Brenda Pictor lost on the 19^th hole. That leaves three non collegiates left in Championship Flight.

Monday Qualifying Round News
Three tie for Medalist at Southern

The rain came in to interrupt twice during qualifying at the 95^th but did not stop the golfers from qualifying well. Three young golfers emerged from the pack to shoot even par and tie for the medalist. Elizabeth Brightwell, University of Virginia, Ashley Lance, University of Mississippi and local favorite Mary Alice Murphy who will start Mercer University in the fall all finished the challenging Lookout Mountain Course at even par to share the Medalist Honors.

Carolyn Creekmore from Dallas Texas and Brenda Pictor from Marietta Georgia both qualified for Championship flight and tied for Senior Medalist with scores of 79.

Junior Amira Alexander from Alpharetta Georgia won junior medalist honors and Kendall Wright from Suwanee Georgia took home the low net trophy.

The University of Mississippi who supplied the most college entrants won the team trophy with Ashley Lance and Kathryn Fowler shooting 72 and 74 respectively.
